Adult driver training · Kansas City Northland

There are eleven lessons in a week, and twenty‑six people already waiting for them.

Adult driver training in the Northland, one instructor and one car. Most people on the list below are between twenty-two and sixty. Some have never held a licence, some held one in another country, and some are coming back to it after a long time away. The wait is printed rather than described.

The list

One car. One instructor. Eleven two‑hour lessons in a normal week.

That number does not move when we are busy, so the only honest thing to publish is the queue itself. Every row below is one person waiting: their position, the town the car has to be driven to, the one window of the day they told us they can take, and the week we have offered them. Nine of the twenty-six can only take an evening, which is why the evening line is more than twice as long as the morning one.

A 6:30 or a 10 a.m. puts you in the week of 17 August, three weeks out. If an evening is the only thing that works, the first one that is genuinely free is the week of 14 September. Nobody is going to tell you it is sooner and then move you.

The four windows

A day only has four places a lesson fits, and one of them shuts for the winter.

The car is driven to you and taken back, so a two-hour lesson costs closer to three hours of the day. Four windows is what is left. Which ones you can take is the single thing that decides your place on the list, more than when you called and more than what you are willing to pay.

6:30 a.m.

Two of the eleven

The quietest roads you will ever get. It suits shift workers and anybody who would rather make their first mistakes with nobody behind them. From November to February you will be doing that first left turn in the dark, with a cold windscreen.

10 a.m.

Four of the eleven

The easiest traffic of the day and the shortest line on the list, because most adults cannot take it. If your work is shift-based, self-directed, or you are between jobs, this is the window that gets you driving in three weeks instead of seven.

After work

Three of the eleven

The one everybody asks for and the one that runs out of light. Kansas City sunset is about 8:47 in the evening in the middle of June and about 4:56 in the afternoon in the middle of December, so from late October to early March this window starts at 3 p.m. instead and there are fewer of them. It is not a policy. It is the sun.

Saturday

Two of the eleven

Eight in the morning to two in the afternoon, and booked further ahead than anything else. Empty retail lots are open, which is where reversing and parking actually get learned, and there is no school traffic anywhere in the Northland.

The car alone in an empty snow-edged park and ride lot before seven in the morning, headlights on, frost still across the windscreen and the sun barely up behind bare trees.

Moving up

Four things shorten your wait, and paying more is not one of them.

  1. Give us two windows instead of one

Almost all of the wait on this list is people who can only do one thing. Saying yes to a 10 a.m. as well as an evening usually halves it.

  2. Get on the cancellation text

About one lesson a week comes free, normally with less than a day's notice. It goes out as a text to everyone on the list and the first person to answer takes it.

  3. Be reachable between 10 and 2

That is when seats are offered. One offered at 11 and not answered by 1 goes to the next person, because the car is booked that afternoon either way.

  4. Live near somebody else on the list

The car comes to you. Two lessons in the same town on the same morning is a slot that would not otherwise exist, so a second person in Kearney or Smithville helps both of you.

The instructor's brake pedal bolted into the passenger footwell above a worn rubber mat.

What does not move you up

There is no expedite fee, no priority tier and no second car. If somebody offers you one of those, they have a second instructor you have not met.

What it costs

Printed here, because in this trade it usually is not.

Paid at the lesson. There is no deposit, no package you have to buy to get onto the list, and no charge for a cancellation you give us a day's notice on.

  • Two hour lesson$150
  • Six hours, booked together$420
  • One hour assessment, for a licence from another country$85
  • Pick up and drop off inside the NorthlandIncluded
  • Pick up and drop off outside it$25

Getting on the list

One question decides where you land, so have the answer ready.

Which windows can you take. Not which you would prefer, which you can actually make on a normal week. Everything else about your place on this list follows from that.

And what has to be in your hand

Never held a licence
A Missouri instruction permit. We cannot teach you without one.
A licence from another country
Bring it, and book the one hour assessment first.
A Missouri licence that lapsed
Bring it anyway. What the state wants back depends on how long ago.
Current licence, years since you drove
Nothing at all. Book the two hours.

Permits, road tests and reinstatement are the Missouri Department of Revenue's, not a driving school's. Settle those with a licence office first, so the hour we book is a lesson.
